It’s time to plan out the garden and order seeds. We still have about eight inches of snow on the ground, but soon enough, we’ll be able to pop the cold-weather plants in the ground. For $40, I rented a 20×30 foot garden, complete with its own spigot. It’s a few minutes from my house by car, although I’m going to see if there is a safe way to bike there.
This year, I am excited that we were able to snap up one of the last few community garden spots in our new home town, Champaign, IL. Having no space to garden in our new place, I’m thankful that I can continue to hone my plant-not-killing skills as we make progress toward owning Farm And Away.
Even though I intend to have professional farmers working with me to make the farm a dynamite success, I know that the more I experience of gardening and farming, the better I will be able to manage this enterprise. Last year was our first good harvest in four years of trying, and we moved about a month before most of it was ready. Please, Universe, let this be the year that we garden well AND we get to eat the food!
